We are a community of UC Berkeley researchers based in the computer science and electrical engineering departments whose work considers the effects of algorithms on societal problems and vice versa. We’re interested in issues where algorithms meet people, including automated decision systems, algorithmic fairness and justice, repercussions of data collection and algorithmic interventions. Though our work draws on a variety of subfields—including natural language processing, cryptography, STS, statistics and machine learning theory, human-computer interaction, political economy, and control theory—we share a vision of simultaneously critiquing and improving algorithmic effects on society.
Our weekly meetings provide a space to hear from invited speakers, share work in progress, and brainstorm ideas.
